Artist Statement

So sorry I haven't posted anything in almost a week, just because I have other things to do, namely, studying. Such a stressful time of year ahhhh!!! Anyways, I just wanted to share my artist statement I wrote for a school assignment and let's see if you all agree on my definition of art.

Ugly

There is no need to glorify art. Art is not depicting the world in a unique perspective or finding something special in ordinary things. Art is ugly.

As human beings, we have such spastic emotions so we are subjected to so many terrible things, often out of our own doing. It is so hard to let out that twisted ball of rage or desperation, so it is up to the world’s most emotional people, artists, resort to canvas or stone to unleash the ugly things balled up inside. As that little ball unravels, it dances across surfaces, or shoots out of the artist’s fingertips as little bolts of genius, to make something so ugly, that we see it as beautiful. The most inspiring masterpieces evoke fascination because we are not quite sure how an emotion so hideous could be made to look so beautiful.

As an artist, I used to think art was about communicating a message or proving a point, but I realized that it doesn’t have to be that complicated. I realized that works of art are just solid embodiments of uncontrolled emotion, and I have been grateful for some emotional experiences that have helped me grow as an artist. The night after I made a speech at my uncle’s funeral, I stayed up all night drawing. I had this numb pain inside of me that I had been unable to translate into tears at the funeral, but somehow it kept on eating away at my insides. I could feel it threatening to tear itself out of me by force, but with a pencil in my hand, I unwound the pain slowly, translating it into a language I knew well onto the page. I wasn’t quite aware of what I was drawing, but I remember seeing something ugly on the page. I spend lots of nights like that, with music playing and the house creaking as I draw and paint late into the night. When I feel angry, I use pencil because it’s something I can control and I have power over the ugly thing. When I am sad, I like to use ink or watercolors because of how meticulous and permanent they are, so I have to trust myself to manipulate them.

There have been times in my life when I feel as though everything is ugly. Sometimes I hear about people killing each other for no reason other than the satisfaction of killing someone different. Sometimes I do things that I am later disgusted by, and I don’t want to believe that I have become so ugly. Sometimes I have the courage to grasp that ugliness and wrestle it until it ceases to roar. I wrestle with a paintbrush, magazine scraps, glue, ink, and pastel, anything that will satiate the ugliness’s hunger. As I developed as an artist, I learned that what ugliness most hungers for is beauty.

I never realized that ugliness and beauty are separated by a very thin line, and the artists I most admire are those who prance along that line with a paintbrush in hand. When I first saw The Virgin by Gustav Klimt, my first impression was the breathtaking use of color and intricate swirls. I thought it to be a very complicated image until I realized that the sleeping women in the painting were depicted as ugly. Their sprawling and tangled limbs indicated erotic positions often found in many works by Klimt, sparking controversy among many people. However ugly they seemed to society, the atmosphere that surrounded them was not sensual to me, but powerful in a beautiful way. I love many of his other works including The Kiss and Adele Bloch-Bauer I, and he is a major source of inspiration for much of my artwork. I also love Georgia O’ Keefe’s unconventional way of portraying flowers and skulls, and I especially enjoyed her modernist exhibit at the Phillips Gallery. I always appreciate artists that are fearless enough to be raw in their emotions, and put something alive on a canvas. I think art can be living and breathing. It is up to the artist to make that happen.

As an artist, I want to redefine ugliness and beauty. I want to find the beauty in something ugly, or the ugliness in something beautiful. I am inspired by ballet dancers because they are breathtaking until they take off their toe shoes, and you see calluses and bloody nails. I am inspired by thunderstorms because when lightning lights up the sky for that split second, you get to see the world again, even when it should be hiding in the dark. I am inspired by childbirth, because the image and emotions surrounding the pain is exhilarating.

I am inspired by life, because life is beautiful.

Iron Man 2: Review

Everybody knows that I think Robert Downey Jr. is pretty much the coolest movie star in the entire world (Simon Baker is my favorite TV actor and also my celebrity dad), and so seeing Iron Man 2 was at the top of my priority list. Everybody should go see it, not because it's the best movie ever, but because RDJ is awesome. Anyways, review time!

Pros: More action and fight scenes this time and there were more characters involved the entire story line, unlike the first movie. I really liked that they didn't reform Tony Stark completely but actually made him more egotistic, proving that this genius wasn't perfect. Mr. Hammer, Stark's rival, was so annoying in the part. Justin Rockwell did a great job of playing the part, because he succeeded in making the audience want to punch him in the face for being so patronizing. I loved that he treated Mickey Rourke like a 5-year-old kid. Also, Tony Stark wore this totally awesome robe in one scene and I really really want it. Unfortunately, I can't find a picture online so you will just have to watch the movie yourselves.

Cons: The story line definitely wasn't as defined as the last movie and deviated a little bit. And the actor replacement for Tony Stark's BFF was really weird because the first James Rhodes was really funny in the role but the second actor was downright stoic. And at the end, Tony and Pepper kiss. I could've sworn that at the end of the last movie, they were already together and for some reason this kiss was portrayed as a very big deal. I never really liked Pepper anyways. Another thing: Samuel L. Jackson in a weird leather jacket and an eyepatch? Totally unnecessary. Scarlett Johanssen was eh. I liked the stuff she wore to the office though. Overall, the movie was a bit too cheesy and clumsy, but what superhero movie isn't?

Rating: 7/10

4.30.1975

Two days ago marked the 35th anniversary since the fall of Saigon. As a first generation Vietnamese-American, this day holds a special place in my heart, and if not for it, I would never have lived my life in the US. Vietnam today is not a huge part of history in the eyes of American educators, but the Vietnam War and its aftermath is a huge part of my cultural identity, and it should be for all Vietnamese-American teenagers. I know this blog is usually funny and random, but I really want to share the history of 4.30.1975 because it's extremely important. Going to an American school, we often hear the winner's side of the story, and I am here to offer a second account of the events that occurred.

In 1945, Vietnam was considered part of France, and after some confusion after WWII, it ended up remaining that way. In 1954, the Communists of Vietnam was just one of the many groups chafing under French rule, wanting to overthrow them. In a battle called Cuoc Chien Dien Bien Phu, the Viet Minh (what the Communists used to be called) defeated the French and signed an agreement stating the Vietnam would be divided at the 17th degree parallel.

Ngo Dinh Diem was appointed the first president of the Republic of Vietnam. Under his leadership, the southern part of divided Vietnam prospered. At this time, Saigon was at the top of Southeast Asia. It was even considered one of the "5 Dragons" of this time. Southern Vietnam was producing enough rice to feed 3 countries, and was the first to use nuclear energy.

On the other hand, northern Vietnam wasn't doing as well and decided not to honor the agreement tey signed.  After 1954, they started penetrating into southern Vietnam, and after 1960, the civil war started. The US started helping out southern Vietnam. Well, we could all think that they did this out of the kindness of their hearts, but that isn't true. The Cold War made the US and the Soviet Union enemies, and since the SU was helping out northern Vietnam (Communist), then the US took revenge by representing capitalism in southern Vietnam.

Vietnam was glad for US aid, but only wanted money and weapons. Ngo Dinh Diem didn't want any soldiers, but the US provided those anyways because the Great Depression had left many Americans unemployed and economically weak. Since Ngo Dinh Diem continued to oppose, the US killed him. President Kennedy had nothing to do with it, and didn't find out until after the act happened. Those who killed the president of Vietnam later killed Kennedy as well.

Nguyen Van Thieu was later named president, and was forced by President Nixon to sign an agreement stating that the US would pull out of Vietnam. However, the north was still getting tons of help from communist China and the Soviet Union, so they became stronger against the south.

By March 1975, the south was screwed. And by April, we were officially screwed. After 4.30.1975, the fall of Saigon, many Vietnamese fled the country to escape the Communist Party.

"BRAKE!!"

My mother finally decided to let me start driving after having my permit for three weeks now. We went to the cemetery and she made me drive at 2 mph for about 2 hours until I stopped giving her mini-heart attacks every time I had to make a sharp turn. Driving was an experience all right...I was surprised at how little I had to press the gas pedal and how hard it is to keep the car off the grass. Maybe that means I'm a bad driver, but I'm still learning! I'm pretty sure I annoyed that one girl putting flowers on a grave because I passed her about 2383900 times while driving around those winding roads. I did try to go in reverse one time. That was in short, not a good idea.

Some of my favorite blogs and sites

I'm pretty much obsessed with blogs because there are so many great ones out there! My favorite ones are beauty blogs because they aren't just rants about random things which is pretty much what this blog is about. (Probably the reason why no one reads this thing.) Anyways, a list of some of my favorite blogs and sites, and don't expect me to post the URL because I'm too lazy and I should start doing my study guide for history. So just google it or if you don't care, don't.

DMV Debacle

I finally got my permit!!! (Meaning everybody else stay off the roads.) While at the DMV I met some very nice people. They are surprisingly cheery over there. Anyways, if you're at Springfield Mall for some reason, pop in and talk to the hilarious Indian guy and the cool black dude. Everybody was looking at my transcript and laughing at my photo. I probably found this incredibly entertaining because our school has like 5 black people (including the guy with pencils in his hair) and no Indian people. Too bad...we're missing out.

New blog!

So I started a blog over the summer awhile ago, but it was a fail because there is absolutely nothing to blog about in the middle of summer besides movies and what color I painted my toenails. This new form of procrastination should be much more productive than Facebook and Tetris. The name refers to Harry Potter, of course, and whoever did not know that should go poop in a bowl. Or die. I am perfectly content to dedicate this entire blog to the discussion, dissection, and overall obsessing about Harry Potter and also talking about how much TWILIGHT SUCKS, but I don't think this blog would get much popularity from my peers. However, talking about Harry Potter should be expected about once a week. Anyways, I'm supposed to be writing a paper on A Tale of Two Cities now, so goodbye for now!
